Lucy Powell Wins Labour Deputy Leadership with Call for Hope

Lucy Powell expressed her gratitude to Labour supporters for electing her as the Deputy Leader of the Party, emphasizing the importance of offering hope and significant change that the country seeks. She won the Labour deputy leadership contest with 54% of the vote, surpassing Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson’s 46% share. Powell highlighted the need for a clearer sense of purpose, standing by Labour values and beliefs.

Regarding her new role, Powell stated that people feel the current government lacks boldness in fulfilling promised changes. The contest arose from Angela Rayner’s resignation due to a property purchase oversight. Powell received 87,407 votes, while Phillipson garnered 73,536 votes, with a turnout of only 16.6%.

In her acceptance speech, Powell expressed her appreciation for the integrity of the contest organizers and the support from party members. She acknowledged Bridget Phillipson’s talent and values, as well as Angela Rayner’s significant contributions to the party.

Powell urged unity within the Labour Party to address rising division and discontent in the country. She emphasized the party’s commitment to tackling inequalities and implementing progressive policies to improve people’s lives. Powell highlighted the party’s historical achievements and the need to engage members and affiliates in shaping Labour’s future direction.
