The officers responded to a harrowing incident in Hainault, East London on April 30, 2024. A man named Marcus Arduini Monzo crashed a van into a house, fatally injuring a pedestrian and then attacked a 14-year-old on his way to school with a samurai-style sword.
Upon arriving at the scene, the officers found the assailant had already taken a life. Despite the danger, PC Mechem-Whitfield and PC King pursued Monzo into an alley where a violent confrontation ensued. PC Mechem-Whitfield suffered severe injuries to her hand, almost losing it, while PC King intervened with limited resources, forcing Monzo to flee.
Inspector Campbell, who arrived at the scene promptly, also faced injuries while aiding in Monzo’s arrest. Thanks to their collective efforts, Monzo was apprehended and sentenced to a lengthy prison term. The officers were honored with an Outstanding Bravery award for their heroic actions.
