Labour Minister Accuses Nigel Farage’s Reform UK of Russia Influence
Business Secretary Peter Kyle launched a scathing criticism of Nigel Farage and his Reform UK party, alleging a concerning connection with Russia. Kyle claimed that there is a prevalent “culture” within the party that aligns with Vladimir Putin’s viewpoints. This accusation follows the imprisonment of Reform’s former leader in Wales, Nathan Gill, for accepting Russian bribes.
In an interview on Sky News, Kyle emphasized Reform UK’s “Russia problem,” pointing out Farage’s past support for Putin and appearances on Russian TV networks. He asserted that the party’s inclinations towards a pro-Russian stance are evident, despite denials from Farage and Reform UK.
Gill, who was sentenced to 10-and-a-half years for bribery, received illegal payments to advocate for a Putin ally accused of treason in Ukraine. The disgraced politician’s actions were condemned by a top judge as a betrayal of public trust, prompting calls for Farage to investigate potential Russian influence within the Reform Party.
Formerly associated with UKIP and Brexit Party, Gill’s conviction raises concerns about Farage’s stance on Putin, given his previous statements of admiration for the Russian leader. The Reform leader’s history of pro-Putin remarks and appearances on Russian media outlets has drawn criticism and intensified scrutiny on the party’s ties to Russia.
Reform UK’s head of policy, Zia Yusuf, sought to distance the party from Gill’s actions, labeling them as “ancient history” and urging against tarnishing the party’s reputation based on one individual’s misconduct. However, questions persist about Reform UK’s stance on Russia, especially in light of the recent legal case involving Gill.
Farage’s past comments on Putin’s actions, NATO, and Ukraine continue to fuel speculation about his alignment with Russian interests. Despite attempts to clarify his position, Farage’s statements on Putin’s invasion of Ukraine and his interactions with Russian media outlets have sparked controversy and led to calls for greater transparency within Reform UK regarding its relationship with Russia.
