“Influencers Flock to Dubai for Glamour, Facing Legal Risks”

In a constant scroll on Instagram, one cannot miss the recurring visuals of Dubai’s sun-drenched beach clubs, stunning skyscraper sunsets, and extravagant scenes beneath the city’s skyline. For numerous influencers and social media enthusiasts, Dubai appears as a glamorous haven where rules seem non-existent until they suddenly matter.

Over the recent years, a significant portion of the British influencer community has been relocating to the United Arab Emirates, notably Dubai, enticed by the allure of tax-free earnings and the perceived “safety” they flaunt online.

While Dubai may offer a sense of security for some, it poses risks for others, particularly in relation to same-sex relationships, which are prohibited in the UAE. Violating this law, whether as a visitor or resident, could result in imprisonment.

The legal system in the UAE, including Dubai, is a combination of civil and Islamic laws aimed at maintaining social order. These laws, though intended for societal harmony, may appear excessively stringent to Western visitors.

Public decency regulations strictly discourage displays of affection in public spaces, with even minor acts like kissing in public potentially leading to incarceration. Additionally, actions like swearing or making rude gestures are illegal, and visitors are expected to adhere to Islamic cultural norms regarding attire, with specific guidelines for women’s dress code.

Furthermore, the UAE closely monitors social media activities to prevent criticism of the government, contrasting the freedom of speech typically enjoyed in the UK. The country has a zero-tolerance policy towards drug-related offenses, as evidenced by the experience of former Love Island participant Kaz Crossley.

In a recent incident in February 2023, Kaz was detained in Dubai following scrutiny of a 2020 video allegedly showing her engaging in drug use. During her detainment, Kaz shared her distressing ordeal, including being placed in a cell with a woman and her infant who had been imprisoned for an out-of-wedlock pregnancy, describing it as a deeply challenging experience.

Despite ongoing regional conflicts and missile threats, figures like former Apprentice star Luisa Zissman maintain that they perceive Dubai as safer than the UK. However, amidst such tensions, some influencers, like Kady McDermott, have faced backlash for seemingly disregarding the gravity of the situation by posting leisurely content during the conflict.

The Middle East conflict, exacerbated by recent events involving Iran, continues with numerous flight cancellations and delays affecting travel in and out of Dubai. Many tourists find themselves stranded, awaiting updates on their return options.

In essence, while Dubai may boast lower crime rates compared to some regions, it enforces stringent regulations on daily activities that may be taken for granted in the UK. Additionally, the allure of luxurious lifestyles in Dubai, exemplified by events like the controversial ‘Porta Potty Parties,’ may not always align with the stark realities of life in the region.
