“Hollywood Actor John Pickard Fatally Gored by Bull on Farm”

John Pickard, a renowned Hollywood character actor of his time, tragically met his end when he was fatally injured by a bull he had rented for breeding on his farm. Today, his resting place is just a few feet away from the site of the incident.

Pickard, known for his roles in films like “True Grit” (1969) alongside John Wayne, hailed from Lascassas, Tennessee, and was highly regarded as one of the finest character actors in the industry. His career began in 1936, and by 1939, he even featured on a US Navy war bond poster.

After serving in the Navy from 1942 to 1946, Pickard returned to pursue his acting career with a focus on Western films and dramas. Over his impressive 40-year career, he appeared in various notable productions, including his role as Frank Ross in “True Grit” (1969).

Tragically, Pickard’s life was cut short in 1993 when he was killed by a bull during a family picnic on his farm in Lascassas. Unbeknownst to him, the bull he had rented for breeding turned out to be the cause of his demise. At the time of his death, Pickard was survived by his wife, Ann, son John, and three grandchildren.

Throughout his career, Pickard showcased his talent in a wide range of roles, starting from his early appearance in the 1936 film “Mary of Scotland” at the age of 23. He also had a recurring role in the TV series “Boots and Saddles,” appearing in 38 episodes. Additionally, Pickard had a rich family history, with his great-great-grandfather being an early settler in Tennessee and his great-aunt, Willie Betty Newman, being a prominent plantation owner and artist.

Notably, controversy surrounded the film “True Grit,” with Elvis Presley missing out on a supporting role due to billing demands by his manager, Colonel Tom Parker. The movie also saw another actor causing frustration for John Wayne during filming.
