An innovative glass structure has been developed to provide a safe haven for mountain climbers facing high-altitude dangers. The camp, crafted by designers, is set to debut at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan before being transported to its permanent spot in the Alps.
This striking bivouac is a collaborative effort between Italian design firm CRA-Carlo Ratti Associati and Salone del Mobile.Milano. The design process commenced with a meticulous 3D scan of the surrounding rock formations in the Alpine region to ensure seamless integration with the landscape.
Carlo Ratti, co-founder of CRA, emphasized the importance of creating a structure that blends harmoniously with the natural surroundings, contrasting it with the intrusive appearance of traditional bivouacs seen in alpine settings.
The design by CRA-Carlo Ratti Associati aims to minimize visual disruption while maximizing functionality, incorporating features for energy generation, storage, and water collection through air condensation.
Maria Porro, president of Salone del Mobile.Milano, praised the project for its commitment to blending research with nature, showcasing a design ethos of circular and responsible practices from Milan to the Alps.
Carlo Ratti highlighted the design philosophy inspired by renowned Italian architect Gio Ponti, likening architecture to a crystal and utilizing digital fabrication techniques to create a bivouac that seamlessly integrates with the natural rock formations of the Alps.
