A German autobahn was nearly the scene of a major accident when a couple, reportedly engaged in sexual activity while driving at 90mph, caused chaos on the road. The 37-year-old male driver and his 33-year-old female companion were observed by a witness swerving across the A1 motorway, prompting a concerned driver to alert the authorities.
The couple was apprehended at a petrol station near Münster following the witness’s report of the reckless behavior. The male driver is facing charges for endangering road safety. Reports from local media indicated that the vehicle, traveling towards Dortmund, veered so drastically to the right at one point that a nearby truck was forced onto the hard shoulder.
While Germany’s Autobahn is renowned for its stretches without speed limits, not all sections are unrestricted. Approximately 30% of the roads have speed limits in place, with an additional 9% utilizing traffic management systems to ensure safe traffic flow. Some areas enforce strict speed limits, particularly in regions with higher traffic volumes or elevated risks.
In a recent incident in July, a driver was caught speeding at an alarming 200mph on the Autobahn, exceeding the limit by more than 124mph. The speeding driver, who remained unidentified, was apprehended during a routine check on the A2 highway near Burg, just west of Berlin. Law enforcement in Magdeburg imposed a €900 (£784) fine, a three-month driving suspension, and deducted two points from the driver’s license.
