George Russell has expressed his eagerness to compete directly against Max Verstappen as his teammate at Mercedes, dismissing any worries about their intense rivalry and recent public disagreements. Verstappen was strongly linked with a move to Mercedes earlier this season but opted to secure his long-term Formula One future beyond 2025, considering the upcoming technical rule changes. If Red Bull fails to provide a championship-worthy car next season, Verstappen could once again become available.
Mercedes is positioned as a top contender to secure the 27-year-old’s services, potentially forming a high-octane driver duo with Russell, who had public clashes with Verstappen towards the end of the 2024 season. Despite not being close friends, Russell clarified in an interview with The Telegraph that he and Verstappen maintain a professional and respectful relationship, indicating they could collaborate effectively as colleagues.
Russell mentioned that they greet each other but do not engage in extensive conversations, emphasizing that their dynamic does not bother him. He highlighted that successful driver partnerships do not always require close friendships, citing examples like Senna and Prost, and Hamilton and Rosberg. Russell expressed his admiration for Verstappen’s driving skills and stated his eagerness to compete against him, believing in his own abilities as a top-tier driver.
As of now, Russell and Verstappen are in contention for the Constructors’ Championship, with Mercedes leading Red Bull by 10 points for the second position, while Ferrari is closely trailing. Verstappen could opt to remain with Red Bull until the end of his current contract in 2028, benefiting from the team’s progress under the leadership of Laurent Mekies. If Red Bull maintains its current momentum, they are poised to be a strong competitor under the new regulations coming into force next year.
