Friend of Methanol Poisoning Victim Calls for Action

A close friend of a British individual who tragically passed away due to consuming illicit alcohol overseas has shared the harrowing account of her gradual illness after consuming shots, emphasizing the need for more preventative measures against methanol poisoning.

Recently, the Foreign Office expanded the list of countries at risk for methanol poisoning by adding eight new nations, highlighting the dangers posed by fake or contaminated alcoholic beverages. This list now includes Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda following reported incidents. Methanol poisoning occurs when methanol is added to drinks like cocktails and spirits to increase volume and reduce costs.

Symptoms of methanol poisoning encompass nausea, vomiting, dizziness, and confusion, with more severe signs such as vision problems emerging between 12 to 48 hours post-consumption. Bethany Clarke, residing in Brisbane, Australia, shared her distress upon hearing about the additional countries added to the risk list, stressing the necessity for further action to prevent more tragedies.

During a backpacking trip across Southeast Asia with her late friend Simone White, both women unknowingly ingested methanol-laced shots, leading to severe illness. Tragically, Simone succumbed to methanol poisoning. Bethany expressed the urgency for increased awareness, stating that more deaths are likely unless decisive actions are taken by the British government.

Reflecting on their experiences, Bethany mentioned their casual consumption of methanol-laced shots mixed with Sprite during their travels through Cambodia and Laos. Despite feeling unwell the next day, they continued with their plans, only to realize later that their symptoms indicated early signs of methanol poisoning.

The situation worsened as Bethany fainted and Simone continued vomiting, prompting their hospitalization in a local facility with limited resources. Despite efforts to save Simone, including emergency brain surgery, the diagnosis of methanol poisoning came too late, resulting in her tragic passing.

Bethany has since dedicated herself to raising awareness about the dangers of methanol poisoning, emphasizing the need for comprehensive education and preventive measures. She strongly believes that more deaths are imminent unless urgent actions are taken. Bethany advocates for caution, recommending sticking to sealed beverages and prioritizing safety to avoid potential risks associated with consuming counterfeit or contaminated drinks.
