A former prominent jockey, Luke Tarrant, has been detained in custody and is facing three charges related to armed robbery. Tarrant, currently serving a 12-month racing disqualification for a previous offense, was denied bail during his recent court appearance in Caloundra, Queensland, Australia.
According to Racenet.com, Tarrant has been accused of three counts of armed robbery, entering premises with the intent to commit a serious offense, and possessing illegal substances. The offense of robbery carries a maximum sentence of 14 years in prison, with the possibility of a life sentence for cases involving armed robbery, violence, or accomplices.
Tarrant is scheduled to appear in court again on March 19. The 31-year-old jockey, who has achieved success with 502 wins, including victories in three Group races, notably triumphed in the Gold Coast Magic Millions 2YO Classic in 2015.
In recent years, Tarrant faced disciplinary actions in the horse racing industry. In 2020, he was banned for six months after admitting to assaulting another jockey. Additionally, in October of the previous year, Tarrant was disqualified for one year for failing to cooperate with an inquiry regarding health assessment forms.
The case was referred to Queensland’s Racing Integrity Commission, which directed Tarrant to enter a plea. Despite several reminders, Tarrant did not respond. The Commission panel emphasized the importance of upholding integrity within the racing community and ensuring participant welfare.
Stewards recommended a 12-month disqualification starting from October 8, 2025, as a consequence of Tarrant’s actions. This decision aimed to uphold the integrity of the sport and reinforce the obligation of licensed individuals to cooperate with investigations.
