Former Hurling star DJ Carey has been sentenced to five-and-a-half years in prison for deceiving friends, family, and fans by falsely claiming he had cancer and soliciting nearly €400,000 for treatment.
Carey, a resident of Maynooth, Co Kildare, admitted to 10 counts of fraudulently obtaining money from 13 individuals, including prominent figures like Denis O’Brien and Owen and Ann Conway. Judge Martin Nolan criticized Carey for taking advantage of people’s trust and described his actions as “reprehensible.”
Despite acknowledging that Carey is unlikely to reoffend, Judge Nolan emphasized that the tarnishing of Carey’s reputation is a significant consequence of his deceitful behavior. The 52-year-old, known for his successful hurling career with Kilkenny, was led away to serve his custodial sentence after the court proceedings.
Sporting a purple jacket, navy shirt, and black shoes, Carey made his appearance at the Criminal Court of Justice in Dublin today. This marks a stark downfall for the once-celebrated athlete, who now faces the consequences of his fraudulent actions.
