Zenit St. Petersburg’s Andrei Mostovoy bravely fought off a group of kidnappers who attempted to abduct him outside a grocery store. The Russian footballer was ambushed by three masked individuals in a minibus on Krestovsky Island in St. Petersburg. Mostovoy’s quick reaction, along with the assistance of his friend Alexander Grakun, thwarted the abduction attempt.
Grakun intervened and pushed the attackers away, allowing Mostovoy to escape to safety. Following the incident, Mostovoy reported the incident to the authorities. Grakun’s mother, Natalya, commended her son’s swift actions that prevented the kidnapping, emphasizing his physical and mental strength in overpowering the assailants.
In an interview with KP-Petersburg, Natalya praised Grakun’s decisive response, mentioning that Mostovoy managed to evade the perpetrators due to his agility. Mostovoy later expressed his shock at the incident in a video interview with Fontanka news outlet, highlighting the unsettling nature of the event.
Despite the harrowing experience, Mostovoy returned to training and scored a crucial goal for Zenit in a match against Dynamo Moscow, helping his team secure a 2-1 victory. Subsequently, reports emerged that the same group later abducted Sergei Selegen, son-in-law of a State Duma lawmaker, leading to their apprehension by the police.
The Moscow Times reported that additional suspects were detained in connection to the kidnapping attempts, with claims suggesting a foreign involvement in the scheme. The detained individuals are facing serious charges, including kidnapping and robbery. Authorities, including the Investigative Committee of Russia, the FSB, and local police, collaborated in the investigation, leading to the arrest of the suspects.
The St. Petersburg Prosecutor’s Office confirmed that the initial four suspects are in custody awaiting further legal proceedings. The coordinated efforts of law enforcement agencies resulted in the successful apprehension of the perpetrators involved in the abduction attempts.
