“Fake Death Fraudster Sentenced: Amy McAuley Gets 3 Years”

Amy McAuley, aged 35, believed she had successfully evaded the law by staging her own demise. However, she has now been handed a three-year prison sentence for her actions.

The Dublin Circuit Criminal Court was set to hear McAuley’s case in January 2023 on charges related to theft and attempted deception. In 2018, she manipulated documents to acquire a €10,000 loan from KBC Bank and later tried, but failed, to secure an additional €5,000 loan. McAuley’s fake death announcement surfaced on RIP.ie on January 4, nearly a week after the supposed funeral date.

The fabricated notice detailed her passing on December 26, 2022, expressing sorrow from family and friends. It mentioned a viewing at a Shankill funeral home and a funeral service at St. Mary’s Church in Lucan on December 29, followed by cremation. McAuley’s trial was delayed when she impersonated her sister to inform authorities of her death, triggering the issuance of two death certificates.

Authorities uncovered McAuley’s ruse in mid-2023 when they spotted her at a wedding in Enniscorthy. She had posted multiple false death notices online, including one where she posed as an undertaker. McAuley later admitted to the deception, citing fear of court and concern for her child as motivations.

Further investigations revealed McAuley’s attempt to exploit her employer’s death-in-service benefit by fabricating her demise. This led to a €9,000 goodwill payment from the company. Subsequently, McAuley received a three-year prison term for her offences.

McAuley confessed to several crimes, including submitting false death notifications and forging documents. She also admitted to previous thefts and possession of illicit proceeds. The judge, considering the deliberate and prolonged nature of her offenses, handed down a four-year sentence, with the final year suspended under strict conditions.

Despite McAuley’s remorse, her complex history of deceit and theft resulted in a significant legal penalty. The court mandated a probationary period post-release and required full disclosure of her medical records to the prison authorities. McAuley’s defense highlighted her challenging circumstances, health issues, and impending motherhood, acknowledging the gravity of her actions and the consequences she now faces.
