A revolutionary laser system developed in Britain, known as DragonFire, has successfully intercepted high-speed drones, marking a significant advancement in the country’s defense capabilities.
During recent trials conducted at the Hebrides range of the Ministry of Defense (MOD), the DragonFire laser effectively neutralized drones with speeds of up to 650km/h, which is twice as fast as a Formula 1 car. This cutting-edge laser technology, reminiscent of Star Wars, boasts a cost of only £10 per shot and boasts remarkable precision, capable of hitting a £1 coin from a kilometer away.
Following the successful trials, a £316 million contract has been awarded to MBDA to supply new systems to the Royal Navy starting from 2027, accelerating the integration onto a Royal Navy Type 45 destroyer by five years compared to the initial schedule.
As part of the Strategic Defense Review (SDR), the DragonFire laser system represents a groundbreaking achievement as the first high-power laser developed by a European nation, positioning it as one of the most advanced directed energy weapons programs within NATO.
The state-of-the-art DragonFire laser is anticipated to generate and support 590 employment opportunities throughout the United Kingdom, highlighting the defense sector as a catalyst for economic growth.
These job opportunities include 200 highly skilled positions in Scotland, 185 roles in the South West of England, and 75 jobs in the East of England, aligning with the Government’s Plan for Change initiative.
Luke Pollard MP, the Minister for Defense Readiness and Industry, emphasized the significance of the high-power laser system in positioning the Royal Navy at the forefront of innovation within NATO, enhancing the defense capabilities of the UK and its allies in response to evolving threats.
Moreover, Scottish Secretary Douglas Alexander highlighted the crucial role of Scottish expertise in national security, underscoring Scotland’s global reputation as a hub of defense excellence, particularly evident in the successful trials of the DragonFire laser system.
