In the early hours of the morning, a criminal threatened a baby by holding a piece of broken glass to its head during a carjacking incident in Belfast city center. The child was in the back seat of the vehicle with its mother while the father, who was driving, stepped out to make a delivery at around 3:50 am.
Two men approached the car on foot, with one entering the driver’s seat and driving off with the woman and child still inside. Shortly after, the man turned and menaced the baby with what the woman believed to be a broken bottle or glass fragment.
The woman was instructed to leave the car along with the baby, after which the criminal drove away. The abandoned vehicle was later found on a nearby residential street, approximately a mile from the carjacking scene. Police have labeled the incident as “absolutely shocking” and “extremely distressing,” urging anyone with information or witnesses to come forward.
According to Detective Sergeant McVeagh, the delivery driver left his vehicle, a white Vauxhall Agila, in the Donegall Place area, leaving his partner and their young baby inside. Two men then approached the car, with one taking control of the vehicle and driving away, while the other attempted to intervene without success.
The criminal then held what appeared to be a broken bottle or glass piece to the baby’s head, prompting the woman to exit the car. The perpetrator then drove towards City Hall and Chichester Street before abandoning the vehicle in Upper Stanfield Street. Detective Sergeant McVeagh emphasized the severity of the incident, stating that the victims were left shaken but thankfully unharmed, and investigations are ongoing.
