A man aged 25 in Cork has been accused of killing his mother and attacking his father. David Gallagher, a resident of Shrewsbury Downs, Ballinlough, appeared in Cork District Court after an incident involving a stabbing on Monday night. Authorities responded to a residence at Shrewsbury Downs around 9 pm on Monday.
The accused, David Gallagher, faced charges of murdering his mother, Stella Gallagher, 59, at their home on Monday, as well as assaulting his father, Brian Gallagher, 63, at the same location on the same evening. Stella Gallagher was taken to Cork University Hospital on Monday night, where she was pronounced dead. She was a chemical engineer who had a long tenure at Eli Lilly in Cork.
Dt Sgt Niall Hayes from Blackrock Garda Station presented evidence regarding the arrest, charges, and cautioning of Gallagher. Gallagher remained unresponsive when the charges were formally presented to him at 1:27 pm. He had been held for questioning at Bridewell Garda Station.
Sgt John Kelleher stated that authorities would request a custody remand at Cork District Court on November 26, as bail is not typically granted for murder charges at the district court level. Defense solicitor Shane Collins Daly requested and was granted free legal aid for Gallagher, who is currently unemployed. The solicitor mentioned that Gallagher had received medical attention every eight hours while in custody and had been medicated during these intervals.
Collins Daly further requested urgent medical and psychiatric evaluations for Gallagher upon his transfer to Cork Prison. The judge approved this request and mandated that the defendant receive appropriate medical care while incarcerated. Gallagher was remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear at Cork District Court via video link on November 26.
