A charming Scottish village has captured the attention of popular Gavin and Stacey actor, Mathew Horne. Departing from the urban setting of his television character, the 47-year-old actor has reportedly made Helmsdale, a serene village on the east coast of Sutherland, his new home.
Originally from Nottingham, Horne, known for his roles in the Catherine Tate Show and Dad’s Army, now divides his time between bustling London for work and the peaceful environs of Helmsdale, a picturesque yet secluded village.
Expressing his love for the Highlands, Horne disclosed in a podcast interview that he has a strong affinity for Scotland and aspires to reside there, describing himself as a true Scotophile.
In another conversation with the Sunday Post, Horne praised Scotland as the finest country, expressing his desire to own a place there to retreat whenever needed. He emphasized his admiration for the tranquility, people, cuisine, and weather of Scotland, highlighting his preference for spending leisure time in the country.
Helmsdale, situated along the North Coast 500 route, offers a breathtaking 516-mile journey through the stunning landscapes of the Scottish Highlands, as reported by the Daily Record. Horne shared a special connection with Helmsdale, attributing it to his ancestral roots in Huntly, which makes him one-eighth Scottish.
The village, with its origins dating back to 1814, thrived during the 19th-century herring boom, contributing to the prosperity of coastal Scottish communities. Today, the village retains its historical charm, with a bustling harbor frequented by local fishermen and a scenic shingle beach offering panoramic views of the Moray Firth.
Visitors to Helmsdale can explore the Emigrants statue, symbolizing the town’s historical emigration challenges. The Timespan Heritage Centre, a local community hub, features a museum, art programs, herb gardens, a shop, bakery, and a cafe, offering a blend of history and modern art experiences.
For those who enjoy a drink, Helmsdale is conveniently located near renowned distilleries like Old Pulteney, Clynelish, Glenmorangie, and Dornoch, catering to whisky enthusiasts. Horne, who also holds Glasgow dear to his heart, reminisced about his comedy beginnings in Edinburgh at the Fringe Festival in 2000.
Overall, Helmsdale stands as a peaceful retreat with a rich history and scenic beauty, attracting visitors and residents alike with its tranquil ambiance and picturesque surroundings.
