Moroccan authorities detained over 100 individuals attempting to enter Spain’s Ceuta enclave, responding to social media calls for another mass migrant crossing. This incident occurred following a surge of 72,000 migrants into Ceuta two weeks ago, which led to heightened tensions and anti-immigration sentiments globally. Among those arrested were 109 migrants from sub-Saharan Africa and two Moroccan citizens near the city of Fnideq.
Reports indicated that Moroccan police used tear gas to disperse migrant groups near the border, with a heavy security presence observed. Spanish security forces were on high alert in Ceuta, where soldiers guarded key locations, and police patrolled the streets extensively. In response to the situation, Spain reinforced its security measures, including the deployment of additional police personnel and the installation of a maritime barrier.
Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska emphasized the need to restore order in Ceuta and prevent future incidents. Despite the challenges, thousands of migrants remained in the enclave, facing uncertainty about their legal status and potential return to Morocco. In light of social media calls for more crossings, security measures were intensified near the border and in other nearby areas like Melilla.
Efforts to prevent further crossings were evident as authorities restricted movement in various cities and deployed security forces to control access routes. Despite the risks and challenges faced by migrants, some individuals continued their attempts to reach Ceuta, seeking opportunities for a better future. Messages from those who had previously crossed advised against further attempts, recognizing the dangers and uncertainties associated with irregular border crossings.
