The online petition, slated for presentation in the House of Commons, advocates for Hoekstra’s removal and has amassed over 100,000 signatures.
Lee Walker, the petition’s originator, highlighted the widespread discomfort among Canadians regarding Hoekstra’s alignment with President Trump’s viewpoints on Canadian sovereignty. Walker criticized Hoekstra for his alleged interference in Canadian politics and undermining of the Canada-U.S. diplomatic relationship.
In response to Hoekstra’s controversial remarks, including suggesting Canada’s annexation by the U.S. as a viable discussion topic, Walker emphasized the inappropriate nature of such statements from a diplomatic figure. The petition also calls for a review of U.S. diplomatic interference in Canadian affairs by the Canadian government.
Although the U.S. Embassy declined to comment on the petition, the tension between the two countries amid trade negotiations was acknowledged by Walker. She emphasized the importance of upholding Canada’s sovereignty and expressed hope that the petition would convey a strong message to Hoekstra and the government.
Green Party Leader Elizabeth May, set to present the petition in Parliament, commended the public response and highlighted the role of diplomats in fostering relationships. Drawing a comparison to a former U.S. ambassador, May criticized Hoekstra’s approach and highlighted the necessity of respectful and diplomatic conduct in such positions.
Despite uncertainties about the petition’s outcome, both Walker and May stressed the significance of initiating a dialogue on the matter. They emphasized the importance of Canadian solidarity and standing firm against behaviors deemed unacceptable from foreign representatives.
