Today, as I stand before the assembly to solemnly recite the names of women believed to have lost their lives at the hands of men over the past year, the customary nature of my role fades away. This annual ritual serves as a stark reminder of the harsh realities faced by women in our nation and globally on a daily basis. It is a poignant occasion that underscores the weighty responsibility I bear.
Each name on the list symbolizes the collective failure of our Parliament, institutions, and society at large to safeguard women from harm. On this International Women’s Day, I rise not only as a Minister and Member of Parliament but also as one of 265 female MPs, united in recognizing the remarkable achievements of women across various spheres.
While celebrating women’s accomplishments worldwide, it is essential to acknowledge the lived experiences of many who endure threats, abuse, and violence. This day is not for self-congratulation but a call to action to address the ongoing tragedies faced by women. It is a moment that holds profound significance, reflecting our nation’s values and the safety of those we prioritize.
This day belongs to the women we honor, to all females confronting threats and violence, often at the cost of their lives. Despite the emotional weight and difficulty of this day, I am committed to continuing this tribute. Our resolve to combat violence against women and girls is resolute, aiming to reduce it by half within a decade. This initiative is not merely a policy but a vital support system.
Protecting women and girls must remain at the core of our endeavors. I pledge to persist in making our country a safer place for them, whatever the challenges may be.
