An additional 53,000 households will receive an average discount of £325 on their water bills through an expanded WaterSure scheme. This initiative aims to assist households using high water volumes, with eligibility now including recipients of specific disability benefits. Qualifying for the scheme requires claiming Disability Living Allowance, Attendance Allowance, or Personal Independence Payments (PIP) with an annual household income under £25,745.
Currently, around 260,000 households benefit from the WaterSure scheme, saving an average of £325 each, according to the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs. To qualify, households must have a water meter and be high water users due to medical conditions or having three or more children.
The reform eliminates the need for a doctor’s note for application and adjusts the price cap calculation method, potentially saving existing recipients up to an additional £100. Water Minister Emma Hardy emphasized the importance of supporting vulnerable households facing cost-of-living challenges, especially with water bills.
Mike Keil, Chief Executive of the Consumer Council for Water (CCW), praised the government’s adoption of recommended WaterSure scheme changes, providing relief to more customers with essential water needs. James Taylor from disability equality charity Scope welcomed the extended support for disabled families, acknowledging the financial strain they face due to higher water usage requirements.
