“Aldi Tops as Most Cost-Effective Supermarket: Which? Study”

Aldi has been recognized once again as the most cost-effective supermarket this month, as per the recent price analysis by Which?. The study compared prices of a shopping list containing 89 items in February, revealing that the average cost at Aldi was £161.56. In comparison, Lidl’s list was slightly pricier at £162.75, followed by Asda at £181.06 and Tesco with a Clubcard at £181.58.

The shopping list included a mix of branded and own-brand products like Birds Eye Peas, Hovis bread, milk, and butter. Waitrose emerged as the priciest supermarket this month for a smaller list of items, averaging £217.02, showing a significant £55.46 difference compared to Aldi.

For a longer list of 225 items, Tesco was found to be the most economical choice for Clubcard members, with the total cost amounting to £580.35, making it cheaper than Asda by £3.97. Without a Clubcard, the total at Tesco was £629.25, which was £48.90 more expensive. Notably, Aldi and Lidl were excluded from this comparison due to their smaller product ranges.

Waitrose also stood out as the most expensive on average, with the larger shopping trip costing £650.11, displaying a £69.76 difference compared to Tesco with a Clubcard. The analysis by Which? factored in special offer prices and loyalty discounts but excluded multi-buy deals.

Reena Sewraz, Which? Retail Editor, commented on the findings, highlighting Aldi’s top position and the competition between discounters like Lidl. She also noted the value of Tesco’s Clubcard for branded product enthusiasts and expressed hope for wider accessibility of these savings. With consumer budgets facing pressure, the analysis underscores the potential savings by choosing where to shop wisely.
