The duration of awards for individuals applying for Personal Independence Payment (PIP) will be prolonged starting in April to address the existing backlog.
PIP serves as the primary disability benefit for individuals of working age in the UK. Those requiring additional support with daily activities due to an illness, disability, or mental health condition may be eligible for PIP.
Eligibility for PIP is not solely determined by the condition but by its impact on daily life. Currently, PIP is typically granted for a specific period, with the minimum duration being as brief as nine months.
Beginning in April 2026, changes will extend the minimum award period to three years for most new PIP claimants aged 25 and above, increasing to five years upon subsequent review if entitlement persists.
The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) disclosed that this measure aims to free up healthcare professionals to conduct more in-person assessments and undertake additional reassessments.
These operational adjustments are distinct from the Timms Review, which will scrutinize PIP’s role, eligibility criteria for daily living and mobility components, and assessment procedures.
PIP comprises two components: the daily living and mobility components. The standard rate for daily living is £73.90 per week, while the higher rate is £110.40 weekly.
For the mobility component, the standard rate is £29.20 per week, and the higher rate is £77.05 weekly. Any changes in health or condition should be promptly reported to the DWP.
Individuals with terminal illnesses typically receive PIP automatically without requiring an assessment. If granted PIP under the terminal illness special rules, the award is valid for three years before review.
PIP is accessible for individuals aged 16 to state pension age. If PIP is claimed and state pension age is reached, the claim generally remains active.
Reapplying for PIP at state pension age is possible if eligible within the past 12 months.
