Crossroads star Tony Adams, famous for portraying Adam Chance in the soap opera, has passed away at 84 years old. He died at Sussex County Hospital in Brighton over the weekend, with his wife Christine by his side.
The long-running soap concluded in 1988 after airing more than 4,500 episodes, with Adams remaining part of the cast until the finale.
As one of the original actors, alongside Jane Rossington and Kathy Staff, Adams returned to his role when Crossroads was revived in 2001.
Following his death, heartfelt tributes flooded in. Augustus Prew, who played Adams in a drama, fondly recalled him as a “magical man” in interviews. Michael Rose, from The Michael Rose Organisation Ltd, praised Adams as a versatile talent, highlighting his skills as an actor, dancer, and singer.
Rose expressed, “He was one of the warmest gentlemen you could wish to work with. He was an absolute joy.” He continued to commend Adams’ versatility, noting his performances in various productions, including Grandpa Potts in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.
Born Anthony Sawley Adams in Anglesey, Wales, in 1940, he honed his acting craft at the prestigious Italia Conti theatre school. He gained fame as Dr. Neville Bywaters in the 1970s soap General Hospital and appeared in the Doctor Who series The Green Death.
In 1978, Adams took on the role of Adam Chance in Crossroads, which became his most recognized character. He shared his fondness for the show, revealing that he stayed in touch with some of his co-stars.
When asked about being typecast due to his role, Adams acknowledged some impact but highlighted his diverse roles in other productions. He particularly enjoyed playing villainous characters in pantomimes.
Adams later showcased his talents in the stage production of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang at the London Palladium Theatre in 2004. In 2023, he made a cameo appearance in Nolly, a drama by Russell T Davies focusing on Crossroads actress Noele Gordon.
