A single selfie taken at an event in 2019 led to a prolonged cyberstalking ordeal that lasted four years for two entrepreneurs, leaving them feeling despondent as their hard-earned reputations were tarnished. The distressing situation began with a brief 40-second encounter that quickly spiraled into a relentless campaign of falsehoods and online harassment. Brad Burton, 52, an entrepreneur and author, and Naomi Timperley, 53, a businesswoman, were targeted by Samantha Wall, 55, from Stockport, who made a series of fabricated allegations, including accusing Mr. Burton of infidelity, harming her pet, and mistreatment.
Wall was sentenced to two years and four months in prison at Manchester’s Minshull Street Crown Court for her actions. The victims recalled the initial meeting, where they exchanged pleasantries and took a photo together before Wall unleashed a barrage of lies on social media platforms. Among Wall’s unfounded claims were allegations that Mr. Burton had been involved in criminal activities, including harassment, police raids, and imprisonment, which were all proven false.
Ms. Timperley, from Sale, endured three years of online harassment, facing a constant stream of defamatory posts. Wall was eventually brought to justice in 2023 after denying charges of improper use of electronic communication and stalking, only to change her plea on the day her trial was set to commence.
During the court proceedings, both victims detailed the severe impact of Wall’s actions on their lives, recounting the mental health struggles they endured as a result of the relentless cyberbullying. Mr. Burton expressed his hope that Wall’s imprisonment marked the end of a challenging chapter but criticized social media platforms for their lack of accountability in addressing such issues. He highlighted the need for improved online safety measures, especially in light of advancing technology and the challenges posed by cyberharassment.
Greater Manchester Police provided support to the victims throughout the ordeal, emphasizing the importance of reporting online harassment and stalking incidents promptly. PC Wayne Hasselby, who led the investigation, emphasized the toll such actions can take on individuals’ mental well-being and reaffirmed the commitment to prosecuting offenders engaged in cybercrimes.
