Global Leaders Stand Firm on Ukraine’s Borders

Ukraine has been cautioned against yielding land or reducing its military by Donald Trump. Global leaders convened urgent discussions on Ukraine at the G20 summit in South Africa, rejecting portions of the US President’s peace proposal.

A collective statement by Keir Starmer and other G7 leaders, excluding the US, emphasized the preservation of Ukraine’s borders without coercion. The UK Prime Minister mentioned an upcoming conversation with Mr. Trump and a scheduled discussion with Volodymyr Zelensky.

The Prime Minister disclosed no plans to visit Washington DC, focusing on imminent talks in Geneva. Notably, officials from the US and Ukraine are set for urgent discussions in Switzerland, with special envoys Steve Witkoff and Marco Rubio attending.

The UK’s National Security Adviser, Jonathan Powell, will participate in the Geneva talks post his early departure from the G20 summit. Attendees from France and Germany are also expected.

Mr. Trump has imposed a strict deadline of November 27 for Ukraine to respond to his 28-point peace plan, which includes a ceasefire and territorial concessions to Russia. Concerns have been raised by Keir Starmer and allies regarding the plan’s impact on Ukraine’s armed forces and territorial integrity.

The UK, along with several other nations and EU representatives, issued a comprehensive statement expressing support for Ukraine and the need for sustainable peace. President Zelensky emphasized the importance of protecting Ukrainian national interests and preventing further Russian aggression.

In response to the peace plan, Russian President Vladimir Putin cautiously welcomed the US proposal, suggesting potential for a final peace settlement. The ongoing diplomatic efforts aim to secure a just and lasting peace for Ukraine.
