IT Consultant Leaves UK Job to Join Jihad in Syria

An IT consultant from the UK made a sudden decision to leave his job and travel to Syria during a period of civil unrest in the country with the intention of joining militant groups in their fight. Isa Giga, 32, informed his family that he was heading to Birmingham but instead flew to Syria via Turkey, aiming to become a martyr with terrorist organizations. Giga, who was employed at the technology company ANS, sent an email to his family expressing his desire to participate in jihad.

Back in 2015, Giga, then 22 years old, resigned from ANS after just five months and flew from Heathrow to Turkey, not returning as planned. He corresponded with his sister, explaining his actions and motivations for joining the conflict in Syria against the Assad regime and ISIS. Despite his family’s dismay and attempts to contact him, Giga remained resolute in his decision to stay in Syria and fight for his cause.

Giga later disclosed to his family via email that he had completed military training and was preparing to serve on the front lines, emphasizing his willingness to sacrifice for his beliefs. Despite his father’s efforts to persuade him to return, Giga remained steadfast in his commitment to the cause. Subsequently, he was sentenced to nine years in prison, with an additional year on license, for his involvement in terrorist activities. Giga denied the charges but was found guilty of preparing for terrorist acts and will be under monitoring as a terrorist offender for 15 years.
