Thousands of households in the UK may soon lose access to premium TV channels, including content from Sky, due to a crackdown on illegal streaming. Police have closed down a significant illicit data center believed to have been providing unauthorized access to premium sports, movies, and subscription-based TV channels to numerous users. This action has disrupted pirate streaming networks nationwide, preventing many from enjoying these services without paying for official subscriptions.
Detective Sergeant Ben Hobbs from the City of London Police’s Police Intellectual Property Crime Unit (PIPCU) emphasized the extent of illegal streaming in the UK, stating that the operation’s size underscores the prevalence of this activity. He urged individuals to use official sources rather than pirated ones to avoid risks, assuring ongoing collaboration with industry partners like Sky to dismantle illegal streaming networks and safeguard consumers.
The enforcement operation took place in Farnborough, where PIPCU, in collaboration with Sky, dismantled the infrastructure supporting the illegal streaming operation. The facility reportedly housed high-capacity servers used for distributing illegal streams.
Sky’s Group Director of Anti-Piracy, Matt Hibbert, praised the action taken by PIPCU to shut down the nationwide illegal streaming operation, emphasizing the connection between illegal streaming, organized crime, and its negative impact on the creative industries and consumers. He stressed the importance of continued cooperation between law enforcement and the industry to disrupt these networks, protect content, and ensure consumer safety.
Amidst the ongoing cost-of-living crisis, some consumers have turned to low-cost or free streaming services operating outside the law. However, these services pose risks such as malware, data theft, fraud, and exposure to inappropriate content. Authorities have previously issued warnings to users of illegal streaming services, highlighting the legal and security risks associated with using “dodgy boxes” as a cheaper alternative to legitimate subscriptions.
