“Outcry as 65-Foot Christmas Tree Erected Prematurely in Birmingham”

Residents in a city center are expressing anger over the early installment of a towering Christmas tree, standing at 65 feet (20 meters) in Birmingham’s Victoria Square. The tree, set up for the annual German Market, overshadows businesses on New Street and the council offices. Locals are voicing discontent about the premature display, occurring in mid-October before Halloween and Bonfire Night, with market stalls being assembled well ahead of the customary Christmas season.

Richard McQuaid, a resident of King’s Heath, criticized the timing, suggesting that the council’s focus should be on more pressing matters like waste collection. Reflecting on the unusual juxtaposition of a Christmas scene amidst the Halloween decorations, he emphasized the early nature of the festive setup, more than two months ahead of Christmas day.

Birmingham City Council clarified that the tree installation was the initiative of Frankfurt Christmas Market Ltd, aligning with their event schedule starting on November 1, almost two months before Christmas. Georgina Walsh from Stechford added to the debate, highlighting the divisive nature of the Christmas market discussion in Birmingham.

Social media echoed the sentiment, with users expressing disbelief at the premature holiday preparations. The Frankfurt Christmas Market in Birmingham is slated to open on November 1 and conclude on December 24, managed independently by Frankfurt Christmas Market Ltd. The tree in Victoria Square was specifically arranged by the organization, not the council, for the upcoming festive season.
