The cost of a TV licence is set to increase once again, with the fee rising from £174.50 to £180 starting in April. A TV licence is necessary for watching or recording live TV, as well as for viewing any content, whether live or catch-up, on BBC iPlayer.
If you only watch programs on catch-up using streaming services other than BBC iPlayer such as Netflix, Amazon Prime, ITVX, Disney Plus, YouTube, All 4, or My5, then a TV licence is not required. However, if you watch live shows through these services, you will need a TV licence. Failure to have a TV licence while watching programs that require one could result in a fine of up to £1,000.
In the event that you no longer require your TV licence before it expires, you may be eligible for a refund if there is at least one month remaining on the licence. Additionally, a refund may be available if you qualify for an over 75 or blind concession.
