Team GB aims for its most successful Winter Olympics yet at the upcoming Milano Cortina Games. UK Sport forecasts between four to eight medals for the British contingent in northern Italy. The team’s previous best Winter Games performances were in Sochi 2014 and Pyeongchang 2018, where they secured five medals, including one gold. However, Team GB’s performance leaders have raised their expectations for the upcoming event.
The optimism is fueled by the strong lineup of Team GB athletes heading to Italy, including world champions, X Games gold medalists, and World Cup podium finishers. In the 2024/25 season, British winter athletes achieved an impressive nine World Championship medals across various disciplines.
British skiers and snowboarders have amassed 28 major podium finishes in Olympic events, three Crystal Globes (overall World Cup titles), and one World Championship title courtesy of Zoe Atkin. Chef de mission Eve Muirhead, a curling gold medalist in 2022, commended the meticulous preparations and emphasized the team’s potential to challenge the status quo in 2026.
With high expectations set for Team GB in the men’s skeleton, curling teams, skiing, and snowboarding, Mirror Sport assesses the top contenders for medals in Italy. Notably, men’s skeleton world champion Weston, having claimed three consecutive World Cup titles, is a strong contender alongside his teammate Marcus Wyatt. Muir, a two-time World Cup gold medalist in snowboarding, has also shown great form, winning gold in slopestyle and big air events.
Brookes, the youngest ever snowboarding world champion, has been consistent with her performances, winning Crystal Globes and World Cup events. Atkin, the current halfpipe world champion, and Bankes, a two-time Crystal Globe winner, are also expected to shine at the upcoming Winter Olympics.
Furthermore, figure skaters Fear and Gibson are poised to bring Britain its first Olympic figure skating medal since 1994.
