Skateboarding Legend Andy Kessler Dies from Wasp Sting

A skateboarder known for his daring stunts tragically passed away in an unexpected manner after being stung by a wasp. Andy Kessler, aged 49, was a prominent figure in New York City’s street skate scene, where he revolutionized the sport by introducing ramps for more complex tricks. Rising to fame in the 1970s as part of the renowned Souls Artists of Zoo York collective, Andy’s contributions were significant.

In 2008, while assisting a friend in constructing a deck in East Hampton Town, Andy was stung by a wasp and fell ill. Despite efforts to seek medical help, the Montauk Medical Center was closed, leading to delays in treatment. Subsequently, he was rushed to Southampton Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Close friend Moose Huerta revealed that Andy suffered a fatal heart attack triggered by an allergic reaction to the wasp sting, emphasizing the dangers of allergic reactions if not promptly addressed.

Reflecting on Andy’s impact, fellow skateboarder Chris Nieratko expressed shock and grief over the sudden loss. Andy’s legacy extended beyond skateboarding, as he advocated for skate parks and community involvement. Despite facing challenges like a significant medical bill following a skateboarding injury in 2005, Andy’s resilience and determination inspired many. Friends and supporters came together to raise funds for his medical expenses, highlighting the profound impact he had on the skateboarding community.

Andy’s influence remains strong, with a skatepark in Manhattan being renamed in his honor in 2019 as a tribute to his enduring legacy.
