The ex-chief of the Navy has raised concerns about the potential for the conflict between Russia and Ukraine to escalate into a nuclear standoff.
Admiral Lord West, the former First Sea Lord, cautioned that Britain is essentially engaged in hostilities with Moscow. He highlighted the concept of “grey zone warfare,” citing aggressive actions like Russian interference with undersea cables and drone intrusions along Nato’s eastern border.
In a podcast with the Lord Speaker, Lord West expressed uncertainty about resolving the conflict peacefully, emphasizing the risk of a full-scale war between Nato and Russia. He suggested that Russia, if pushed to the brink, might consider utilizing nuclear weapons.
Former Nato General Secretary Lord Robertson, who oversaw a comprehensive review of the nation’s defense capabilities, criticized Britain’s lack of readiness to combat the evolving threats posed by Russia.
Security experts have previously warned of increasing Russian provocations against the UK, including cyber attacks, aerial reconnaissance missions, arson attacks, and submarine infiltrations.
Sir Ken McCallum, the director of MI5, recently stated that Russia is actively seeking to create chaos and disruption globally, resorting to using expendable proxies after its intelligence operatives were expelled from European embassies.
Lord Robertson reiterated the urgent need for preparedness and vigilance, emphasizing that the cyber domain poses a significant threat. He pointed out that recent cyber incidents were likely orchestrated by the GRU, the Russian military intelligence agency.
He also highlighted that Vladimir Putin’s ambitions extend beyond territorial expansion in eastern Ukraine, causing concerns for neighboring countries like Moldova and Azerbaijan.
Supporting President Zelenskyy and the Ukrainian government is crucial to dissuade Vladimir Putin from his aggressive actions, as it is essential to demonstrate to him that victory is unattainable. Despite minor territorial gains, Putin is not achieving substantial progress in his endeavors.
