“Brazil’s Most Wanted Criminal Killed After 3-Week Manhunt”

A Brazilian community endured fear for three weeks as authorities pursued one of South America’s most wanted criminals, Lázaro Barbosa. The violent spree commenced on June 9, 2021, with a deadly attack on Cláudio Vidal and his family in an upscale neighborhood near Brazil’s capital, Brasília. The swift and brutal assault resulted in the deaths of Cláudio and his two teenage sons, while Cleonice Marques, their mother, was taken hostage and later found dead in a nearby creek.

Residents were deeply affected by the events, with Mathias Folha, a local from Cocalzinho de Goiás, expressing the town’s collective distress and disruption caused by the manhunt. More than 200 law enforcement officers, supported by helicopters, tracking dogs, and a joint effort between federal and local agencies, were mobilized to capture Barbosa.

Described as aggressive and dangerous, Barbosa’s movements were extensively covered by the media, escalating fear in the rural areas. He engaged in multiple criminal activities, including hostage-taking, theft, and confrontations with police, demonstrating a thorough knowledge of the terrain to evade capture.

Following numerous sightings and encounters, a massive operation involving over 270 officers from various law enforcement agencies was launched. Despite community tips and social media reports, Barbosa managed to evade capture for weeks with the help of accomplices who provided shelter and resources.

The intense manhunt culminated on June 28 when Barbosa was spotted near a stream by locals, leading to a large-scale police operation. In a gunfight with officers, Barbosa was shot and later pronounced dead, ending the 20-day search that had gripped central Brazil. Governor Ronaldo Caiado praised the security forces for their efforts on Twitter, emphasizing that lawlessness would not be tolerated in the region.
