“UK Phone Users Urged to Prepare for Digital Voice Transition”

A significant change is on the horizon for phone users in the UK, prompting homeowners to take action before an impending deadline. The traditional copper landlines that have served the nation for decades are being phased out in favor of a new technology known as Digital Voice, which utilizes broadband for making calls.

This upgrade not only aligns with modern requirements but also enhances reliability and introduces new functionalities such as improved call clarity, the option to redirect incoming calls to mobile phones, and enhanced call screening to combat scams and unwanted marketing messages.

Scheduled to be fully implemented by January 2027, BT is initiating a campaign, fronted by Clare Balding, to raise awareness and encourage households to ensure their landline systems are prepared for the digital transition.

Research findings reveal that many individuals in the UK tend to procrastinate essential tasks, assuming that as long as something is functional, immediate action is unnecessary.

Clare Balding emphasizes the importance of responding promptly to communications from service providers to ensure uninterrupted landline services. BT assures customers that they will receive guidance throughout the transition process, with minimal disruption expected, including the retention of existing numbers and stable pricing.

Most households will only need to connect their current phones to their broadband hubs, avoiding the need for technician visits. In rare cases where issues arise, contacting the provider for assistance may be necessary.

Lucy Baker, Consumer Digital Voice Director at BT, highlights the significance of transitioning to digital landlines for a more secure and reliable communication infrastructure, urging individuals to cooperate with service providers for a seamless shift.

BT also emphasizes the importance of customers with special needs, such as users of telecare devices, to inform their providers promptly for tailored support.

Digital Voice, BT’s innovative home phone service, replaces copper connections with broadband technology, offering modern features like Multi Call and call diversion to mobile phones. The service promises improved call quality and compatibility with Digital Home phones.

Switching to Digital Voice is expected to have a minimal impact on phone usage for most households, with costs bundled into existing package prices without additional charges for the new service.
