Anthony Joshua has made a return to the boxing gym almost three weeks after being in a serious car accident in Nigeria. The former two-time heavyweight champion was a passenger in a Lexus SUV that crashed into a stationary truck near Lagos, resulting in the tragic deaths of two close friends and teammates, Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele. Their funerals took place in London on January 4.
While in Nigeria for a holiday and family visit, Joshua had recently fought Jake Paul before the accident. Following hospital treatment and discharge just before New Year’s Eve, questions arose about his future in boxing. However, Joshua posted images on Snapchat showing him back in the gym, engaging in what he called “mental strength therapy.” He showcased various workouts, including lower leg exercises, stationary bike riding, and pool exercises.
Despite reports from Joshua’s uncle suggesting retirement post-accident, Mirror Fighting reports that Joshua has not made a final decision. The driver involved in the crash has been charged with various offenses, and it was revealed that Joshua narrowly escaped death by changing seats just before the accident.
Eddie Hearn, Joshua’s promoter, emphasized that no discussions regarding Joshua’s fighting future were ongoing, stressing the need for Joshua to have time to recover mentally and physically before making any decisions. Hearn expressed support for Joshua’s healing process and hinted that Joshua may return to boxing in the future, but emphasized that the decision lies solely with Joshua.
