A chilling incident unfolded as a Russian helicopter pilot faced a critical decision following a tragic crash that claimed the lives of five individuals. Video footage captured the harrowing scene in Russia’s Republic of Dagestan on November 7, showing the helicopter attempting a landing that went awry, resulting in the aircraft hitting a pier and losing part of its tail.
As the damaged helicopter struggled to stay airborne, the pilot made an unconventional choice to veer towards the open water instead of attempting a safe emergency landing. Tragically, the helicopter eventually plummeted onto a house, leading to the fatalities of five senior members from a Russian defense manufacturing company. The crash resulted in four fatalities, with three survivors sustaining severe injuries.
Newly released footage revealed the sequence of events as the helicopter collided with a pier, causing its tail to break off but remain attached as the aircraft ascended. Despite the damaged tail, the pilot opted to lift the helicopter and head over the sea, attempting to gain altitude. However, the helicopter lost control soon after and began descending rapidly towards the land.
Subsequent CCTV footage depicted the helicopter bursting into flames near the shore before crashing. The pilot, along with two other survivors, is currently hospitalized in critical condition. The pilot’s decision to steer the helicopter towards deep water from the shallow area has sparked criticism among aviation experts, with some questioning the rationale behind such a risky maneuver.
Ruslan Leviev, founder of Conflict Intelligence Team, suggested that the pilot’s actions may have been influenced by intoxication, speculating that the pilot attempted to showcase bravado by trying to salvage the landing at the last moment. The crash claimed the lives of four key figures from the Kizlyar Electromechanical Plant, a company involved in producing equipment for military aircraft. The plant, known for its ground control and diagnostic systems for military planes, faces sanctions related to the conflict in Ukraine.
Russian authorities have labeled the crash as a “catastrophe,” with the Federal Air Transport Agency investigating the incident. The ill-fated flight was en route from Kizlyar to a recreational base before tragedy struck.
