“Father-of-Two Dies in Tragic Balcony Fall on Vacation”

A tragic incident in the Canary Islands claimed the life of a father-of-two, Darren Silcox, during his holiday. The 56-year-old, a respected shopkeeper from Cwmbran, Gwent, was involved in a fatal accident when a wooden bannister rail collapsed on a balcony overlooking an apartment stairwell, causing him and another man to fall 20 feet into the atrium stairwell.

Mr. Silcox succumbed to his injuries, while the other man, aged 54, sustained severe injuries and received medical treatment in a local hospital. The incident occurred at the Galeon Playa Apartments in Costa Teguise, where Mr. Silcox was vacationing with his family.

An inquest into the tragic death revealed that Mr. Silcox died as a result of a fall following the collapse of the wooden bannister. The local civil guard is conducting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The area coroner for Gwent, Rose Farmer, initiated the inquest due to Mr. Silcox’s death from injuries sustained in the fall. Preliminary findings indicate that he suffered a traumatic brain injury, skull fractures, and skull lacerations. The community was shocked by the tragedy, as Mr. Silcox was known for his hard work and dedication, operating two stores in Pontnewydd and Five Locks.

Tragically, Mr. Silcox’s wife had passed away the previous year, leaving their two children without parents. The Spanish Civil Guard is actively investigating the incident, focusing on maintenance and safety issues that may have contributed to the railing collapse.

The incident, occurring in the early hours of October 25, has raised concerns about safety standards in tourist accommodations. Authorities have not disclosed the name of the establishment where the incident took place, and investigations are ongoing. The survivor, aged 54, continues to receive medical care at the Doctor Jose Molina Orosa Hospital.

The inquest has been adjourned until a full hearing scheduled for July 20, 2026.
