“Google and Back Market Introduce USB Kit to Transform Aging Laptops with ChromeOS Flex”

As Microsoft ceased support for Windows 10 nearly half a year ago, numerous laptops are now devoid of critical security updates, leaving them vulnerable to potential cyber threats and malicious software that can compromise data. While some newer devices are eligible for an upgrade to Windows 11 through Microsoft’s update program, older PCs often do not meet the necessary system requirements, forcing users to make challenging decisions.

Users facing this dilemma can opt to persist with unsupported laptops, purchase extended updates (ESUs) at a cost, or acquire new devices preloaded with Windows 11. Alternatively, there is a new option available for aging PCs to prolong their usability and prevent them from being discarded. Google has collaborated with refurbished electronics retailer Back Market to introduce a USB kit that rejuvenates old laptops using ChromeOS Flex software.

ChromeOS Flex is a lightweight operating system compatible with many older computers, essentially converting them into Chromebook-like devices. Once installed, users can access various services such as Chrome, Gmail, Docs, and the Android app store without the need to invest in a new laptop.

Although ChromeOS Flex has always been accessible as a free download from Google, the new USB kits streamline the installation process. Users can even test the system directly from the USB drive before committing to a full installation. These kits have gained popularity among enthusiasts, with high demand leading to them currently being out of stock.

In a blog post, Google stated, “Last October marked a turning point for hundreds of millions of computers. Microsoft Windows 10 reached its end of support, putting those computers at risk of obsolescence. This left many people with a difficult decision: spend hundreds on a new device, or continue using an insecure, outdated one.”

The ChromeOS Flex USB kit is priced at around £3, and the USB stick is reusable, contributing to further reduction of electronic waste. Despite the interest in the product, Back Market has indicated that it is currently unavailable due to high demand.

In addition to revitalizing old laptops, Google highlighted that ChromeOS Flex could offer environmental advantages. Google emphasized, “The manufacturing process of a new laptop contributes significantly to its carbon footprint. ChromeOS Flex enables the continued use of already-manufactured devices, reducing electronic waste and avoiding the emissions associated with producing new devices. Furthermore, ChromeOS is more energy-efficient, consuming 19% less energy on average than comparable systems.”

For those contemplating a switch, ChromeOS Flex is compatible with their devices, offering a viable alternative.
