“Ministry of Justice Discloses 91 Mistakenly Released Inmates”

Downing Street has acknowledged the concerning revelation that over 90 inmates have been erroneously released since April this year. Deputy Prime Minister and Justice Secretary David Lammy disclosed that three prisoners are currently missing following mistaken releases, with officials also probing a potential error on November 3 involving another offender possibly still at large.

The Ministry of Justice (MoJ) has disclosed new data indicating that 91 criminals were mistakenly freed between April 1 and October 31 this year. A No 10 spokesperson emphasized that these incidents reflect a strained prison system inherited by the government, along with a faltering criminal justice system. While rare, these errors have been increasing annually, from an average of nine per month in 2023 to 17 per month the following year. Immediate actions have been taken to address the prisons crisis, including enhanced release checks, engagement with prison governors, and deployment of technology experts.

David Lammy has announced a £10 million allocation for implementing AI-powered tools to assist frontline staff in accurately calculating sentences and upgrading outdated paper-based systems. An urgent independent review has been commissioned to understand the surge in errors, with the MoJ noting that overwhelmed prison staff currently navigate through over 500 pages of guidance, heightening the likelihood of mistakes.

The issue of mistaken prisoner releases gained prominence after the widely publicized case of Hadush Kebatu, a deported migrant involved in protests in Epping, Essex.

In a statement to the Commons, David Lammy stressed the need for a comprehensive overhaul of the prison release service and extended a sincere apology to victims affected by the erroneous releases. He attributed the occurrence of mistakes to an underfunded, understaffed, and overburdened prison system, emphasizing the imperative to reduce such incidents.

Official statistics reveal that around 800 prisoners were mistakenly released during the tenure of the Conservative government, with the number escalating annually. Upon assuming office, the Labour government witnessed a rise in erroneous releases, partly attributed to the necessity of introducing an early release scheme to address a justice system on the verge of collapse.

David Lammy has defended proposals to release women offenders into the community, emphasizing the need for alternative approaches and considering their roles as mothers in the criminal justice system.
