“Autistic Child Trapped in Hot Shed at Australian School”

A child diagnosed with autism found herself unintentionally trapped inside a sports shed at her school during a scorching hot day. The incident involved Ruby, an 8-year-old student at Manning Gardens Public School in Taree, Australia. Her father, Matthew Everingham, raised concerns after realizing Ruby was missing when he and his partner arrived to pick her up from school.

Matthew described the distressing moment when other children informed him that Ruby was nowhere to be found. Eventually, he spotted Ruby being led out of the shed by a special needs aide, who explained that she had been inadvertently locked inside for approximately five minutes.

According to the father’s account, Ruby’s involvement in a game on “pirate day” may have led her to seek shelter in the shed. Despite Ruby’s fascination with survival TV shows and possible intentions to hide, Matthew believed that she was accidentally locked inside. He criticized the lack of proper ventilation and air conditioning inside the shed, emphasizing the discomfort Ruby must have experienced in the extreme heat.

Following the incident, the school did not contact the family to inform them of Ruby’s disappearance. However, the NSW Department of Education intervened, relocating Ruby to another school in the vicinity. A department spokesperson confirmed that they had met with the family, apologized for the incident, and assured that steps had been taken to enhance student safety and supervision protocols at the school.

The safety and well-being of students remain a top priority for the NSW Department of Education, as they continue to offer support and counseling services to Ruby’s family. Manning Gardens Public School has yet to provide a comment on the matter.
