Labour MP Calvin Bailey, a former Royal Air Force member with over 24 years of service, has criticized Reform UK MP Sarah Pochin and Tory MP Robert Jenrick for what he considers to be “racist” remarks. Bailey, representing Leyton and Wanstead, expressed disappointment in their comments, stating that they are betraying their communities and emphasizing the importance of diversity in shaping society.
Jenrick faced backlash for his comments earlier this year, where he expressed concern over the lack of integration in Birmingham and the absence of white individuals during his visit. Pochin also drew criticism for her remarks about advertisements featuring Black and Asian individuals, which she later described as poorly phrased.
In response, Bailey highlighted the significance of Remembrance Sunday in honoring veterans who have upheld values such as dignity, unity, and hope for the future. He emphasized the need to reflect on the type of society we aspire to build today, urging for unity rather than division and advocating for a fairer society.
Bailey condemned the divisive comments made by Pochin and Jenrick, labeling them as racist and emphasizing that such remarks undermine the inclusive nature of British society. He stressed the importance of embracing diversity, citing the contributions of Commonwealth soldiers in past conflicts and NHS workers during the pandemic as integral parts of the nation’s history.
As a Black British man and a former RAF member, Bailey expressed his commitment to serving his community and standing up against exclusionary attitudes. He emphasized the need to uphold the values of past generations by promoting inclusivity, unity, and optimism for the future.
Bailey concluded by calling for a renewed focus on national unity and progress, rejecting divisive rhetoric and advocating for a society that values all its citizens equally. He emphasized the importance of honoring the sacrifices of the past by working towards a more just and inclusive future for all.
