Police and emergency medical responders rushed to Scarborough Beach last evening following an incident where two teenagers were harmed by fireworks that exploded. The individuals, both 18 years old, were reportedly handling the fireworks when the incident occurred. One teenager sustained hand injuries, while the other suffered facial injuries, according to a statement from North Yorkshire Police. An Air Ambulance was dispatched to the scene in Yorkshire, and the injured teenagers were swiftly transported to James’ Cook University Hospital in Middlesborough for medical attention.
The fireworks display was purportedly unauthorized. A witness mentioned the swift response of ambulance and police personnel, but noted challenges due to congested roads hindering access. The witness suggested that temporarily closing the street to vehicles during such events could enhance safety.
Social media images depicted youths gathered around a bonfire near the RNLI station on the seafront. A video circulating online captured a firework explosion, where an individual was seen walking while holding a sparkler. Surrounding friends were heard encouraging the person as the sparkler ignited and eventually caused an explosion.
The Yorkshire Ambulance Service confirmed receiving an emergency call at 7:13 pm on November 5th regarding the incident at Scarborough Beach. Multiple ambulance units, including two ambulances and the air ambulance, were dispatched to the location, and both injured individuals were taken to the hospital.
Another online witness described the atmosphere in Scarborough on the night of the incident as chaotic, prompting them to seek refuge in the countryside to escape the noise. The witness highlighted the serious injuries sustained by two teenagers at one of the beach bonfires and called for authorities to intervene.
Scarborough Moan, a prominent community Facebook page in the town, reported that children had been “seriously injured.” To prevent the spread of unverified information, the page administrator disabled comments on the post, emphasizing the need for accurate updates and refraining from speculation or inappropriate remarks.
North Yorkshire Police have issued an appeal for witnesses to provide information about the incident. The police statement mentioned that two 18-year-old teenagers were found injured at Scarborough foreshore after handling fireworks. The beach area was temporarily cleared for the air ambulance, but the injured individuals were eventually transported via land ambulance, leading to the beach’s reopening. Investigations into the incident are ongoing, and individuals present at the scene are urged to contact the authorities if they have not already done so.
