One individual has passed away, and a minimum of four individuals sustained severe injuries following a tornado that hit an area located just 10 miles north of Paris.
The Val d’Oise region in France experienced a sudden and exceptionally intense tornado, causing three cranes to collapse and roofs to be ripped off by powerful winds. The event was captured on dramatic footage showing the cranes falling one after another.
Emergency responders, including 80 firefighters, 50 police officers, and 20 ambulance service members, swiftly mobilized to address the aftermath of falling debris in residential neighborhoods in Ermont.
Tragically, the deceased victim, a 23-year-old man, was working at a construction site impacted by the tornado, as confirmed by the Val-d’Oise prefect. Pontoise public prosecutor Guirec Le Bras confirmed the fatality and stated that ten individuals were affected by the tornado.
Roads and railway lines leading out of the affected area north of Paris are currently closed as cleanup operations are underway. The tornado struck at approximately 5:45 pm local time.
The Keraunos observatory, a French meteorological organization specializing in monitoring tornadoes and severe weather events, indicated that the tornado likely originated from a supercell-type storm, characterized by a rotating updraft of circulating air capable of producing severe weather phenomena like large hail, damaging winds, and tornadoes.
French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez took to Twitter to express his concern over the situation, noting the intensity of the tornado episode that affected several towns in Vald’Oise, resulting in one fatality and multiple severe injuries. Nunez extended his support to the local authorities, emergency services, and affected residents while offering condolences to the family of the deceased victim.
