The King informed Prince Andrew that his role as a senior royal was terminated during a brief 10-minute phone conversation.
Following recent allegations regarding his brother’s connections to the late US financier Jeffrey Epstein and suspected Chinese intelligence agents, Charles arranged the meeting. Sources within the royal circle revealed the King’s growing frustration and exhaustion with the ongoing scandals affecting the monarchy, prompting him to urge Andrew to take significant action.
One insider disclosed, “After consulting closely with his family, especially Prince William, the King summoned Andrew to emphasize the importance of doing the right thing. It was made clear to him that it was unreasonable for him to retain the privileges associated with his position.”
Subsequent to the phone call on Thursday, Andrew agreed to relinquish his titles except for prince and issued a statement the following evening. He will no longer hold the titles of Duke of York or a Knight of the Garter, the oldest chivalric order globally. This development occurred seven months after the death of Virginia Giuffre, who alleged she was trafficked by Epstein and coerced into intimate encounters with Andrew on three occasions. The timing coincides with the impending release of her memoir, reigniting the scandal.
Responding to Andrew’s actions, Giuffre’s family expressed satisfaction, considering it a triumph for Virginia and urging the King to strip Andrew of his prince title. Giuffre, who passed away in April at 41, claimed she was among numerous vulnerable girls exploited by Epstein and his affluent associates. Andrew has consistently refuted the accusations against him.

Giuffre alleged that she was coerced into intimate relations with the prince in 2001 at Epstein’s former partner Ghislaine Maxwell’s residence when she was 17. Maxwell is currently serving a 20-year sentence for child trafficking in a Texas penitentiary. The infamous photograph of Andrew with Giuffre was captured at Maxwell’s London home that same year.
In her upcoming memoir, Giuffre recounts being compelled to engage in sexual activities with Andrew at Epstein’s properties in New York and the US Virgin Islands. She also described feeling disgusted witnessing “two of my abusers together” when Andrew was seen alongside Epstein in New York in 2010.
Giuffre expressed astonishment that a member of the royal family would brazenly associate with Epstein publicly after the tycoon’s 2008 conviction for soliciting underage girls. In a disastrous Newsnight interview in November 2019, Andrew claimed to have severed all ties with Epstein after their meeting. However, court documents released this year disproved this assertion, revealing emails from the prince to Epstein in February 2011, with a message stating, “Keep in close touch and we’ll play some more soon!!!!”
In her memoir, Giuffre also disclosed that Andrew insisted she sign a one-year confidentiality agreement to avoid tarnishing the Queen’s platinum jubilee in 2022. Despite fervently denying the allegations, Andrew, 65, settled with Giuffre for £12 million in February 2022 to prevent a civil trial in the United States. Giuffre remarked that she obtained more than just financial compensation, including a £2 million donation to her charity, acknowledging the mistreatment of herself and other women.
In a statement, Giuffre’s family conveyed, “Prince Andrew’s decision to relinquish his titles vindicates our sister and all survivors. This resolute action marks a significant stride towards holding Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell’s child trafficking network accountable. Additionally, we believe it is fitting for King Charles to retract Andrew’s prince title.”
Last week, Andrew became entangled in a high-profile China espionage case involving the government. Recent revelations indicated that the former duke established connections with prominent Chinese Communist Party member Cai Qi, suspected of orchestrating a substantial espionage operation in the UK and purportedly close to Xi Jinping. Pictures of the pair celebrating “joint efforts in fostering a golden era in China-UK relations” emerged.
Prosecutors allege that Cai received confidential government information from parliamentary aide
