Prince Andrew finds himself embroiled in fresh controversy following allegations that he attempted to coerce the Metropolitan Police into launching a smear campaign against Virginia Giuffre, a victim of sexual offenses. This development has sparked strong reactions from high-ranking officials.
Andrew, who has consistently refuted any accusations of sexual misconduct, reportedly tasked his Met bodyguard, a member of the elite SO14 Royalty Protection Group, to investigate Giuffre by providing her personal information, including her date of birth and social security number.
Additionally, Andrew allegedly enlisted the help of one of Queen Elizabeth’s top aides, Ed Perkins, informing the deputy press secretary of his request for damaging information on Giuffre. A leaked email obtained by The Mail on Sunday purportedly reveals Andrew’s communication with Perkins shortly before a controversial photo of him and Giuffre was published.
The email suggests that Andrew accused Giuffre of having a criminal record in the United States, a claim vehemently denied by her family. While it is unclear if the officer complied with Andrew’s alleged demands, the Metropolitan Police have indicated that they are actively investigating the matter.
Commenting on the situation, broadcaster Emily Maitlis expressed satisfaction that the police are looking into the allegations, emphasizing the importance of holding accountable those responsible for making Giuffre’s life more difficult. Maitlis also pointed out Andrew’s continued correspondence with Jeffrey Epstein, indicating a lingering association between the two.
Energy Secretary Ed Miliband echoed concerns about the allegations, stressing that the appropriate use of close protection officers is crucial. When asked about potentially stripping Andrew of his titles, Miliband deferred to the royal family’s stance on the matter.
Giuffre’s family condemned the leaked email, asserting that it exposes the lengths to which implicated individuals go to discredit and defame survivors. They expressed confidence that the truth will prevail, leaving no room for concealment or evasion.
