If you own an Android device, it’s essential to ensure you have the latest update from Google. The tech giant has recently released a critical security patch to address a significant issue affecting many new smartphones.
The security flaw involves specific Dolby audio components that, if present, could enable hackers to execute malicious code through simple audio files.
While Google resolved the issue on its Android devices last month, the patch is now being widely distributed to all Android phones.
Adam Boynton, Senior Security Strategy Manager EMEIA at Jamf, emphasized the importance of addressing this vulnerability. He highlighted that the security bulletin from Google addresses a serious flaw discovered in 2025, which has now been fixed at the Android platform level.
The vulnerability, known as CVE-2025-54957, pertains to a weakness in Dolby’s DD+ Unified Decoder, allowing attackers to execute malicious code. Particularly on Android OS, the flaw can be exploited without user interaction as audio attachments and voice messages are decoded locally.
It is advisable to review your phone’s settings and ensure it is up to date with the latest updates to safeguard personal data. While iPhones are not affected by this specific attack, Apple users are also encouraged to check for and promptly install any available updates.
Boynton reiterated the significance of regular patching to mitigate mobile risks, underscoring that keeping devices updated is crucial for defense against contemporary mobile threats, whether on Android or iOS platforms.
