I extend warm New Year wishes to all Mirror readers. Regardless of how you celebrate, I wish you a fantastic year ahead!
The year 2025 brought moments of immense pride. From the Lionesses’ remarkable Euros victory to the Red Roses triumphing in the women’s Rugby World Cup and Scotland’s exceptional qualification for the World Cup. However, for many, it was a challenging year. I understand the hard work put in by Mirror readers and acknowledge the desire for simple pleasures like dining out, going on holiday, or getting a new phone.
My message for this year is clear: 2026 will be the year where promised changes start to materialize. You will witness improvements in your bills, communities, and public services. Expect more police presence, closure of asylum hotels, opening of new health centers in your area, and investments in community amenities like parks, piers, and youth clubs. Rights at work and in rented homes will be enhanced, and a significant reduction in child poverty will be seen.
Recently, a nine-year-old Scottish girl handed me a note highlighting how poverty affects children – from hunger due to missed meals to living in cold, unheated rooms and the embarrassment of worn-out school uniforms. It’s touching to see such understanding from a child, especially considering that most impoverished children in Britain come from hardworking families struggling to make ends meet.
To combat child poverty, we aim to lift over half a million children out of it by eliminating the two-child limit on child benefits, extending free school meals to half a million hungry children, and focusing on reducing the overall cost of living.
Ensuring financial stability for the nation is crucial. This stability enables us to support you in managing living costs and ultimately increase your disposable income. Initiatives such as freezing rail fares, prescription charges, and fuel duty, reducing energy bills, cutting childcare costs for working families, and raising the national minimum wage will benefit individuals across various sectors.
Revitalizing our nation is a gradual process, but we are making progress in getting Britain back on the right path. Every positive change signifies a reversal of decline, a restoration of opportunities and pride, and a brighter future for families. Hope, a forgotten concept in recent politics, will resurface in 2026 as we witness the true spirit of Britain shining brightly and everyone looking ahead with confidence.
